92 - The Streetfighter (1974)
Sonny Chiba finally makes his debut on the Grindbin with one of his classic films, The Streetfighter.
Chiba fed the hunger for violence and blood when it came to martial arts movies of the 70’s. Whereas the films of Bruce Lee would feature amazing fight scenes, they would never go too far into the territory that would make them exploitative. That is not so with the films of Chiba.
Sonny Chiba is neither graceful nor peaceful, he is a one-man wrecking crew that wasn’t afraid to literally rip the testicles off an enemy and show them to the camera. His films are violent, trashy, and instantly memorable and something you simply couldn’t see (but always wanted to) with his contemporaries.
The Streetfighter is a great example of his work and one of the early films that would catapult him into cult status in America.
